OSCR adds new features to updated Sector Overview Report

03 Jul 2023

The latest version of OSCR’s Sector Overview Report has been published today. The quarterly report uses key facts and figures from our database of charity information to give an overview of the charity sector in Scotland.

The latest version of the report, which covers the quarter 2 period up to 30 June 2023, contains two new features:

  • Changes in the last quarter (page 8) – an overview of charities added to, and removed from, the Scottish Charity Register over the past three months.
  • Interactive local authority map (page 28) – information about the types, numbers and income of charities found in each local authority area across Scotland.

As part of our commitment to promote and improve transparency, the Sector Overview Report has been designed to be an interactive, dynamic report which is updated quarterly to provide the most accurate data about the Scottish charity sector. This also allows us to add new features to the report as we collect more data about Scottish charities.

Viewers can make use of the filtering options within the online report to see the most relevant information.

Some of the key statistics found in the latest report include:

  • 194 charities have been registered in the last quarter.
  • 8,704 Scottish charities (36%) have an income of less than £5,000.
  • Over 92% of the total annual income of the Scottish charity sector comes from just 9% of charities.
  • 41% of charities operate locally in a specific community or neighbourhood, and a further 25% operate within one local authority area.
  • Edinburgh has the highest number of registered charities (2,987) and Clackmannanshire has the least (180).

The updated interactive report can be found on our Sector Overview Report page, along with PDF versions of previous reports.
