Selecting and electing candidates

Once you’ve received applications or expressions of interest, the next step is to engage with candidates.

A formal interview and selection process may not always be necessary, particularly for smaller charities. However, it’s important to meet with any potential charity trustee to ensure they understand the role, what the charity does and if they are a good fit for the organisation.

If you are assessing multiple candidates, even without a formal interview process, it’s essential to use clear and consistent criteria to evaluate each candidate fairly. This approach helps ensure you select charity trustees who will strengthen your Board and support your charity’s purposes and aims. Here are three key areas to consider:

  • Skills and experience: Does the candidate fill a gap on the board or bring valuable knowledge that will benefit the charity?
  • Passion and motivation: Are they genuinely interested in your cause and committed to making a difference?
  • Team fit: Will they work well with the existing Board and contribute positively to discussions and decision-making?

Whenever possible, involve more than one charity trustee in the selection process. This helps ensure a fair and balanced perspective when evaluating candidates.

After making your decision, it’s important to follow up with everyone who expressed interest in the role. For those who were not selected, take the time to thank them for their application and interest in your charity. A thoughtful response can leave a positive impression and encourage them to stay involved in other ways, perhaps as a volunteer, supporter, or even a future charity trustee applicant.
