The Charitable Purposes of the SCIO ("the Charitable Purposes") are: 3.1.1 To advance heritage and culture by preserving and safeguarding the Highland Cattle Breed and ensure its sustainable continuance as an important icon of rural Scotland's heritage. 3.1.2 To apply, assist and facilitate the advancement of science in all aspects of breeding management and husbandry of Highland Cattle. 3.1.3 To advance animal welfare by promoting and advancing the physical and mental wellbeing of Highland Cattle and the prevention of suffering and illness. 3.1.4 To advance environmental protection and improvement by promoting, advising on and facilitating the unique advantages of Highland Cattle in the preservation and conservation of the natural environment and its wildlife habitats and to furthering the cattle management in meeting the challenges of climate change. 3.1.5 To advance education by promoting, encouraging, and organising the development of individual skills, capabilities and understanding in all aspects of Highland Cattle management and breeding amongst stockmen, owners, breeders and the general public.

The Highland Cattle Society SCIO preserves, safeguards and promotes the Highland Cattle Breed; facilitates the advancement of genetic research; promotes cattle welfare and the environmental advantages of the breed and provides cattle breeding and management education. We do this by maintaining the official Herd Book, sponsoring and implementing genetic research and selection, providing expert Field Officers to advise on welfare and management systems and by running a full programme of official shows and sales.

From 09 March 2026, OSCR is required by law to publish the names of a charity’s trustees as part of its Scottish Charity Register entry. We are also required to publish each charity’s annual report and accounts as received from this date, which may include the names of certain individuals. The only exceptions to publication are where a charity or one of its charity trustees applies for this information to be excluded, and OSCR is satisfied that publishing it would jeopardise the safety or security of a person or premises.

If the charity trustee information on a Register entry appears blank, this may mean that an exemption applies or that the charity has not yet provided the required details to OSCR. Supplying this information will become mandatory as part of future annual submissions.

The Scottish Charity Register contains key information about a charity’s operations and finances. This includes:

  • the names of a charity’s trustees (exemptions apply)
  • its annual report and full accounts, if submitted after 9 March 2026
    (Accounts submitted prior to 9 March 2026 will be redacted, or may not be published, depending on the charity’s income level or legal form.)

These changes are designed to improve transparency across the charity sector in Scotland.
