The charitable purpose of the Unit (the Purpose) is to promote the development of young people in achieving their physical, intellectual and social potential as individuals and as responsible citizens by the provision of musical education and leisure time activities using a musical theme and in accordance with the principles, ethos and practices of the Volunteer Cadet Corps. In furtherance of the Purpose, the Unit may: (a) offer young people a structured environment in which to develop. (b) provide access to education and training including (but not restricted to) music, first aid, drill, adventure training and public service. (c) provide opportunities for young people to obtain a range of qualifications. (d) to further the musical education of young people through attending and performing at concerts, competitions and other activities to enable band members to achieve their potential through learning and performance of band and orchestral music and (e) to provide opportunities for community involvement.

From 09 March 2026, OSCR is required by law to publish the names of a charity’s trustees as part of its Scottish Charity Register entry. We are also required to publish each charity’s annual report and accounts as received from this date, which may include the names of certain individuals. The only exceptions to publication are where a charity or one of its charity trustees applies for this information to be excluded, and OSCR is satisfied that publishing it would jeopardise the safety or security of a person or premises.

If the charity trustee information on a Register entry appears blank, this may mean that an exemption applies or that the charity has not yet provided the required details to OSCR. Supplying this information will become mandatory as part of future annual submissions.

The Scottish Charity Register contains key information about a charity’s operations and finances. This includes:

  • the names of a charity’s trustees (exemptions apply)
  • its annual report and full accounts, if submitted after 9 March 2026
    (Accounts submitted prior to 9 March 2026 will be redacted, or may not be published, depending on the charity’s income level or legal form.)

These changes are designed to improve transparency across the charity sector in Scotland.
