3. Objects The object of the CIO is the promotion of the effective use of resources for charitable purposes by charitable and non-charitable bodies in the Environmental Sector, being the part of the voluntary sector concerned with the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment, for the benefit of the public by: (a) liaising with, researching and acting as a forum for the exchange of information between organisations working in the Environmental Sector, in order to identify how the sector might better achieve charitable purposes in conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment, including but not limited to identifying funding gaps and gaps in service provision in the sector; (b) providing advice and information to existing and potential funders of charities and non-charitable bodies working in the Environmental Sector to encourage them to increase their funding and to provide funding in a way which increases the effective application of funding for charitable purposes by the Environmental Sector; (c) providing charities working in the Environmental Sector with strategic and fundraising advice; and (d) such other means as the charity trustees shall from time to time think fit.

Charity accounts and constitution – what information do we publish?

From April 2016 we began to publish charities’ accounts, initially for those charities with an annual income of £25,000 or more, and for all SCIOs.

When a charity publishes its accounts on its website and has supplied us with a link, we have made this available. From late 2017, where the charity is a company, a registered social landlord or is also registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, a link is provided to the relevant regulator’s website where the accounts are made available. We accept no responsibility for the functionality, accuracy, or content of external websites – if you experience a technical issue with an external link, you should contact the charity directly.

You have the right to the following information under section 23 (1)(a) and (b) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, from the charity direct:

  • a copy of the charity’s latest statement of accounts
  • a copy of the charity’s constitution.

In addition to the above, a charity may also be able to provide you with previous years’ accounts and constitutions, although it is not obliged to do so. You can contact the charity to request this information using the contact details on the charity’s Register entry.
