The Charitable Purposes of the SCIO ("the Charitable Purposes") are the advancement of education, arts, heritage, cultural and science by undertaking the following:- 3.1.1 to advance and encourage an interest in history, with particular emphasis on the history of Cupar and the surrounding area, to educate and inform members of the SCIO and the public generally, and to encourage and facilitate research, understanding and publication of the cultural heritage of the area; 3.1.2 to preserve, conserve, understand and interpret, within the national context, the historical and cultural heritage of Cupar and the surrounding area; 3.1.3 to provide a community resource through the collection, classification and conservation of items of local historical interest; 3.1.4 to promote and advance heritage in Cupar and the surrounding area as a source of pride and to address heritage issues affecting the area.

What the charity is set up to do and how it does this:

Cupar Heritage provides a focus for the study of local history of Cupar and surrounding area, by providing an annual season of talks on heritage matters for our membership and the general public, and managing a small museum based in Cupar that is open to visitors between April and October each year. All those engaged in these activities are volunteers who receive no renumeration. Our volunteers greet visitors to the museum, accept donations of artefacts and documents that allow the collection tha we hold to expand, create exhibitions and conduct research to answer enquiries posed by visitors. We work in conjunction with other like minded organisations for the benefit of the community, assist schools with projects related to heritage and give presentations to local voluntary groups about our work.

From 09 March 2026, OSCR is required by law to publish the names of a charity’s trustees as part of its Scottish Charity Register entry. We are also required to publish each charity’s annual report and accounts as received from this date, which may include the names of certain individuals. The only exceptions to publication are where a charity or one of its charity trustees applies for this information to be excluded, and OSCR is satisfied that publishing it would jeopardise the safety or security of a person or premises.
