This clause shall be interpreted as if it incorporates an over-riding qualification limiting the powers of the Charity so that any activity which would otherwise be permitted by the terms of this clause may be carried on only if that activity furthers an object which is regarded as charitable; the expression "charitable" shall mean a charitable purpose under Section 7 of the Charities Act. Subject to this over-riding qualification, the Charity's objects are intended to benefit the local inhabitants of North Uist and the wider Western Isles, visitors to the area, national and international students and artists, and the general public in Scotland and elsewhere by seeking to: (a) Advance education of the arts and the local heritage, including Gaelic culture and language, by establishing and managing a culture and arts centre which also includes a museum of local history in North Uist known as Taigh Chearsabhagh, which is open to all to visit and enjoy; (b) Promote the advancement of education by encouraging an interest in and study of the heritage and local history of North Uist including Gaelic culture and language, through the Taigh Chearsabhagh's museum and galleries; (c) Promote and encourage the development and study of arts and crafts locally; (d) Promote all forms of the arts for the benefit of the inhabitants of North Uist, in order to develop greater appreciation of the arts, culture and heritage as well as improve the quality of and public access to the arts.

Charity accounts and constitution – what information do we publish?

From January 2026, OSCR will begin publishing annual reports and accounts in full online once they are received. This marks a change from the current approach, where OSCR publishes accounts for certain charities, depending on their legal form and income, with personal details redacted.

When a charity publishes its accounts on its website and has supplied us with a link, we have made this available. From late 2017, where the charity is a company, a registered social landlord or is also registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, a link is provided to the relevant regulator’s website where the accounts are made available. We accept no responsibility for the functionality, accuracy, or content of external websites – if you experience a technical issue with an external link, you should contact the charity directly.

You have the right to the following information under section 23 (1)(a) and (b) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, from the charity direct:

  • a copy of the charity’s latest statement of accounts
  • a copy of the charity’s constitution.

In addition to the above, a charity may also be able to provide you with previous years’ accounts and constitutions, although it is not obliged to do so. You can contact the charity to request this information using the contact details on the charity’s Register entry.
