The objects for which the Trust is established are:- 3.1 To advance the knowledge of and promote research into all aspects of the marine environment throughout the world including without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing: (a) all forms and species of life whether animal, plant or otherwise to be found in or upon the world's oceans and seas and the shores thereof having particular regard to endangered species and to such measures as may be conducive to the conservation of marine life; (b) the natural features and phenomena of the world’s oceans and seas and the shores thereof; (c) all archaeological and other manmade features, phenomena and artefacts to be found in or upon the world’s oceans and seas and the shores thereof whether of a fixed or moveable nature including without prejudice to the foregoing generality lighthouses and lightships and other navigational aids. 3.2. To advance and promote the education of the general public without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions by the establishment and provision of a Museum relating, to the marine environment having particular but not exclusive regard to the matters specified or referred to in clause 3.1. which the Trust intends to achieve. 3.3. To adopt a written Collecting Policy and review it at least every five years which policy shall define the types of specimens which the Trust wishes to include in the Collection and the geographical area from which such Specimens may be drawn. 3.4. To maintain an accurate and current Register of all specimens acquired for, or removed from, the Collection.

Charity accounts and constitution – what information do we publish?

From January 2026, OSCR will begin publishing annual reports and accounts in full online once they are received. This marks a change from the current approach, where OSCR publishes accounts for certain charities, depending on their legal form and income, with personal details redacted.

When a charity publishes its accounts on its website and has supplied us with a link, we have made this available. From late 2017, where the charity is a company, a registered social landlord or is also registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, a link is provided to the relevant regulator’s website where the accounts are made available. We accept no responsibility for the functionality, accuracy, or content of external websites – if you experience a technical issue with an external link, you should contact the charity directly.

You have the right to the following information under section 23 (1)(a) and (b) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, from the charity direct:

  • a copy of the charity’s latest statement of accounts
  • a copy of the charity’s constitution.

In addition to the above, a charity may also be able to provide you with previous years’ accounts and constitutions, although it is not obliged to do so. You can contact the charity to request this information using the contact details on the charity’s Register entry.
