The Society is established for the benevolent or charitable purpose of assisting in relieving poverty and that by grant or otherwise to any necessitous case of hardship or privation within the boundaries marked (hereinafter referred to as "the area"). Provided, however, that in very special circumstances the Committee may, if they in their sole discretion think fit, give a grant or grants to persons outside such area, always provided such persons have had some connection with such area through parents or otherwise. In furtherance thereof but not otherwise, the Society shall have the power: (i) To make donations at the sole discretion of the Committee to bodies established in England and/or Wales which are registered as charities or to bodies established in Scotland which have been recognised as Scottish charities and which are fulfilling their charitable purposes within the area provided such donations are made for charitable purposes only and are capable of improving the conditions of life of the inhabitants of the area. To contribute funds directly for purposes within the area which are recognised as exclusively charitable in law as the Committee in its absolute discretion thinks.

Charity accounts and constitution – what information do we publish?

From April 2016 we began to publish charities’ accounts, initially for those charities with an annual income of £25,000 or more, and for all SCIOs.

When a charity publishes its accounts on its website and has supplied us with a link, we have made this available. From late 2017, where the charity is a company, a registered social landlord or is also registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, a link is provided to the relevant regulator’s website where the accounts are made available. We accept no responsibility for the functionality, accuracy, or content of external websites – if you experience a technical issue with an external link, you should contact the charity directly.

You have the right to the following information under section 23 (1)(a) and (b) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, from the charity direct:

  • a copy of the charity’s latest statement of accounts
  • a copy of the charity’s constitution.

In addition to the above, a charity may also be able to provide you with previous years’ accounts and constitutions, although it is not obliged to do so. You can contact the charity to request this information using the contact details on the charity’s Register entry.
