Object:
The said subjects and the building erected or to be erected thereon (hereinafter referred, to as "the Trust subjects") are dedicated and shall be held by us and our successors as Trustees in all time coming for the purposes of a Reading Room for the use of the inhabitants of Baltasound and environs without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, including use for meetings, lectures and classes, and for other forms of recreation, and leisure time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.
Operations:
What the charity is set up to do and how it does this:
The Unst Working Mens Society was set up to provide a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Baltasound and the surrounding environs. The building is to be available for different types of use, including meetings, lectures, classes and other forms of recreation and leisure time recreation. The objects are to improve the conditions of life for residents. In order to achieve this the trustees keep the Baltasound Hall in good condition and make it available to hire for local groups, individuals and organisation with as little costs as possible. The trustees fundraise to cover building costs, by providing events like Fish and Chip nights for the community. In such a rural community these events provide a social opportunity too and are enjoyed by many, so meet the objectives in two ways. The trustees also provide three events to the community for free, these are the Children's Christmas Tree, the Halloween Party and a Christmas Meal for Older People.

From 09 March 2026, OSCR is required by law to publish the names of a charity’s trustees as part of its Scottish Charity Register entry. We are also required to publish each charity’s annual report and accounts as received from this date, which may include the names of certain individuals. The only exceptions to publication are where a charity or one of its charity trustees applies for this information to be excluded, and OSCR is satisfied that publishing it would jeopardise the safety or security of a person or premises.

If the charity trustee information on a Register entry appears blank, this may mean that an exemption applies or that the charity has not yet provided the required details to OSCR. Supplying this information will become mandatory as part of future annual submissions.

From 30 June 2025, OSCR began collecting charity trustee information through OSCR Online. Providing this information is a legal requirement for all charities. The names of trustees will be published on the Scottish Charity Register from early 2026 to promote transparency and strengthen public trust in the sector.
