This article shall be interpreted as if it incorporated an over-riding qualification to the effect that, in any case in which an activity permitted under this article is in its nature capable of being carried on for a purpose which is not a charitable purpose, the powers of the company shall be deemed to be limited to the carrying on of such activity in such manner as will not prejudice the charitable status of the company. Subject to that over-riding qualification, the company?s objects are to benefit the residents of North Berwick as the directors in their absolute and uncontrolled discretion think fit and without prejudice to the foregoing generality: (a) to provide, maintain, service and staff facilities for public recreation in North Berwick; (b) to provide assistance of any kind for the education of residents of North Berwick and their dependants; (c) to provide, maintain, service, plant, cultivate and manage public amenity grounds and gardens within North Berwick and all necessary or desirable ancillary roads, sewers and other services; and (d) the relief of need and suffering of any kind among residents of North Berwick and their dependants

What the charity is set up to do and how it does this:
The Trust uses its resources to help improve the quality of life of the residents of North Berwick. A North Berwick Forever Fund is available to benefit the community in the long term, through offering an annual grant giving programme. This grant giving programme supports individuals and organisations in need who reside or operate within the North Berwick Community Council area. Grant giving themes include; 1) supporting and enhancing recreational cultural and sporting activities and facilities, 2) supporting and enhancing educational and lifelong learning opportunities, 3) conserving and enhancing the historic and built environment of NB. North Berwick Trust also offers an annual Young Person’s Scholarship scheme and a programme to provide funding support for large scale development projects in North Berwick. In addition to its grant programmes, North Berwick Trust is also proudly developing and maintaining 20 hectares of land in the town, for the benefit of the community.

From 09 March 2026, OSCR is required by law to publish the names of a charity’s trustees as part of its Scottish Charity Register entry. We are also required to publish each charity’s annual report and accounts as received from this date, which may include the names of certain individuals. The only exceptions to publication are where a charity or one of its charity trustees applies for this information to be excluded, and OSCR is satisfied that publishing it would jeopardise the safety or security of a person or premises.

If the charity trustee information on a Register entry appears blank, this may mean that an exemption applies or that the charity has not yet provided the required details to OSCR. Supplying this information will become mandatory as part of future annual submissions.

    (Accounts submitted prior to 9 March 2026 will be redacted, or may not be published, depending on the charity’s income level or legal form.)

These changes are designed to improve transparency across the charity sector in Scotland.
