Our Performance Indicators

Since April 2006 we have reported a set of statistics that capture basic monthly data about the sector and show how well we are carrying out our functions.  The figures we report on represent a broad range of information reflecting our performance and charities' response to the regulations.

OSCR's Board revised the performance indicators for 2009-10 onwards, making new information available.  As with data gathered from April 2006 to March 2009, the data we report on includes:

  • applications for charitable status

  • consents and notifications
  • the efficiency of charities in supplying information to OSCR on time
  • annual monitoring
  • inquiries into Scottish charities
  • the number of registered charities in Scotland.

The changes we introduced from 2009-10 onwards include:

  • statistics on the number of new application refusals
  • information on the processing times of new applications for charitable status
  • more information on consents
  • information on charity reorganisation schemes
  • a change to the reporting of timescales for the submission of Annual Returns and Monitoring Returns (now 12 months rather than 10 months)
  • detailed information on the compliance of charity accounts with filing requirements
  • new information on the number of charities removed, including those reporting to OSCR under section 19.

Where changes were made, the new performance indicators provide more information and new information on OSCR's functions.  They are more accurate and are a better indicator of customer experience.  The review of initial performance measures was one of the internal busness objectives outlined in our Coporate Plan 2007-2010.

These statistics reflect activities and outcomes which provide a monthly analysis of volumes or trends.  Trends, outcomes and qualitative assessment which are better reported on an annual basis, which will include these monthly reported statistics, are reported in our Annual Review and Annual Report, and via individual studies.

Performance Indicators

Our performance indicators are reported on a monthly basis and include year-to-date information.  If you wish to compare the 2009-10 figures with previous years, you should be aware of the changes we have made from April 2009 onwards (as explained above).  Figures from April 2010 onwards can be compared to those from the previous year with the exception of those on the compliance of charity accounts (performance indicator numbers 10, 11 and 12).  Click on the links below to view OSCR's performance statistics:
